I'd like to congratulate the private schools for dragging the MVC down even more. Four of the 5 schools (I'm including Belmont) have no fan support, and three of them completely suck in basketball. No wonder Wichita, Creighton, and Loyola couldn't wait to leave. Loyola probably wasn't impressed by Arlington or UMKC either, which is why they contacted the A10. Why Missouri State didn't beg the CUSA for an invite is beyond me. They'll live to regret that one I'm sure.

The Valley could've saved itself in the basketball world by just going to 11 with Murray State, but instead the idiot presidents and the idiots in St Louis can't help but drink the kool aid when it comes to markets. It's an athletics league not an academic league. If your enrollment sucks then maybe your school sucks or costs too much. There's a thought.

My team,UE is one of those lousy teams your talking about ,but Indiana St. isn't. UE ranked top 3 in attendance
probably the last 5 years or more, your Indiana St. was toward the bottom. As far as saying that Loyoya couldn't wait to bolt they were bottom 8 in the conference in attendance. On a side note, could you imagine how many fans would be in the seats at UE and Indiana St. If we had some of the teams that Loyola had the last 3 years. There attendance is horrible.

Loyola's attendance has not been "horrible" the past few years. They have a small arena so the raw numbers are lower. But they have had 4 or 5 sellouts each year since the Final Four and typically fill about 70-80% of the arena. Plus, they have BY FAR the greatest student support. Students line up for hours before each game. Hell, they just played a Tuesday night game against an NAIA team and the student center was jam packed.

Someone should be subsidizing ISU's basketball budget because it's an embarrassment. Tough to say the private schools have been "dragging" down the MVC when Drake/Loyola/Bradley represent the conference's tourney bids since 2017-2018.

To say that athletics IS marketing is only half true. WINNING athletics, mostly men’s basketball, is good marketing. Being in a crappy conference and not being successful will not move the “marketing” needle one iota. But being a successful program, even in a crappy conference can pay dividends.

Butler is the perfect example. When I moved to Indianapolis over 20 years ago, Butler was a sleepy little private college with no real identity and wasn’t a destination school for anyone outside Indiana. Then their president (shockingly) figured out that they could leverage really good basketball into more applications and a ton of free advertising, so they went all in. It took several years, but it was obviously successful. That’s the model that MVC schools should use. They were growing like gangbusters while still in the Horizon League. Their application numbers went through the roof.

Being a great program will matter more than markets. Most mid-major university presidents do not get that.

Right. I was going to say this. An MVC state school hasn't earned the MVC any money by making the NCAA Tournament in five years.

I recognize I'm new here and have a lot to learn, so please be patient with me and correct me where I'm wrong.

From what I gather so far:

1. Having or expressing an opinion while new is frowned upon as it is considered arrogant.
2. The MVC is a public school vs. private school league, each carrying a great deal of disdain for the other.
3. Past history is valued over present situation.
4. When in doubt, focus on attendance.

Please understand, I'm not judging, just trying to learn the rules so I can fit in.

This is an example of the difference between being in a market and having market penetration.
