This just isn't true. Who were the most impactful players in the MVC last season that were brought in via the portal/instant eligibility (I'm disregarding grad transfers because that has always been a thing)? Kobe King? Donovan Clay?
Now look at who left to transfer up in the same year. Terry Roberts, Isiaih Mosley, Noah Carter, Antonio Reeves.
You tell me who is better, the players coming in or the players going out?
You used last years transfers in and this years transfers out . When you use both side of this year, it looks a lot different. Missouri State lost more players than anyone, but at the same time we brought in 2 top 100 4 star P-5 transfers, 3 guards who started for teams that made the NCAA tourney last year, plus another pair of P-5 transfers. Even losing a talent like Mosley, we brought in far better talent than we lost . Indiana State is built almost entirely thru the portal; Loyola, not here anymore, has used the portal to great benefit.Murray State will be a top team this year again with a lot of portal talent. It is what it is; you either assume a victims role or you figure out how to use it.
Missouri State has seemed to use the portal well. Indiana State has the chance to get there, but they brought in a roster through the portal and still finished 9th, they need to develop. Loyola has actually had very few immediate impact instantly eligible players (going into last season).
Custer, Townes, and Norris all sat a year. Schwieger and Knight were both grad transfers. The best player Loyola had gotten that benefitted from the immediately eligible rule (prior to this offseason) that helped the MVC was Tate Hall.
You;re right though on my comparison. I made that comparison because I didn't want to look at this years incoming transfers before they played. I don't want to place an evaluation on someone until we have seen them play in the valley. But if we look at the 2021 transfers in to transfers out, the best "immediate eligible transfer rule" transfers in was Kobe King, and the best transfers out were DJ Horne and Jake LaRavia. Again, the top players leaving are better than the top players coming in.
The current portal setup gives conferences like the MVC a chance to rebuild and replace the players they have lost, and that is great, but there is no question in my mind that we are consistently losing better players that we are bringing in. Now I'm not complaining about that, it's just the truth. It is what it is. I'm happy the players have these opportunities. I hate that Terry Roberts left Bradley but I've got no problem with him having the ability to do what he thinks is best for him. This is 100% the reality of the world that we live in right now and I don't think trying to sugarcoat it and pretend the current portal setup is good for mid major conferences helps anything.
