Taking the opportunity to document this:

"Afterward, Marshall was wooed by N.C. State and rewarded by Wichita State for staying put. A new, seven-year extension of his contract through 2018 will pay him $900,000 this year and an additional $125,000 for every year he remains at Wichita State. Also included is $224,000 in incentive bonuses. The contract renews for two additional years every two years. The contract also calls for Wichita State to fly a private plane to all road games when necessary and allows Marshall and his staff a minimum of six recruiting trips per year on a private plane."

Coach Marshall lost out on recruits at Winthrop University because he did not have the money or resources to pursue some recruits he wanted.

WSU has made being the Shocker coach attractive. He can make the Shockers competitive for the NCAA for the next ten years. But, will he be able to make the Shockers a Sweet Sixteen competitive team? That will be the reason he goes, if playing for a National Championship is important to him. There are some coaches with an ego that causes them to think that bigger is better and more is better. There are other coaches who realize that they can stay somewhere for 10-15 years, build a dynasty, stash some cash, and have a floor named in their honor, without going the BCS route.

The military is no different, you can take certain jobs that lead to a star (retire at $XXX a year for the rest of your life) or you can take the path that assures you make Colonel (retire at $XX a year for the rest of your life).

Whether basketball, the military, or corporate America, your family's stability and happiness play a role.

"Do you think you can win a National Championship at Wichita State?"
That is the question I asked my wife to ask Coach Marshall the next time he attends the meeting for the Shocker Auction. His answer, if he gives one, will tell the tale.

I will answer: Yes.

The national press the Shockers are getting this year will allow him to get into some living rooms that were not previously open to him. Guards and Wings are not the issue. Can he persuade a quality big man and another one to come to WSU and develop over 4 years. If so, you never know.

Again, KU will not play WSU because the Jayhawks know the Shockers can beat them.

Though a juco kid, maybe someone like this will elevate the program even further than it is now.

"Cleanthony Early (6-8/220/SF/Sullivan CC) has seen his stock rise quickly after a great summer and has lined up four out of his five official visits. Early told me by phone that he has taken an unofficial visit to Iona recently and will take official visits in the near future to Wichita State, Washington, San Diego St. and Iowa. Early said he will wait to decide on where to go for his final official visit, but it will be between Marquette, Pitt and Alabama. He has also picked up recent interest from Missouri, Arkansas and Hofstra. Early said he doesn’t have a leader yet and will take a hard look at all of the schools who are pursuing him."

The Shox have a good Sr class this year. It's also a large Sr group this year. If everybody stays there are 5 Sr's on the roster next year.

Marshall says the recruiting class coming in is the best he's ever seen. That means he thinks he has more talent in the next class than he had when he signed Stutz, Murry, and Kyles. Long-time Shocker fans think the next class is the best at WSU since Carr and Levingston 30+ years ago.

Henry Uwadiae - 7' Nigerian who's playing his HS basketball in the USA (redshirt likely)

Cleanthony Early - 6'8" guy whose HS coach said he blocked 42 shots in one game. D3 JuCo POY last year as a Fr. Can shoot from 3. Has a decent crossover and can dribble behind his back while driving to the hoop. Some scouts say he's an NBA prospect as a SG, but his accuracy from 3 (mid-30's) doesn't make that seem likely. Appears to have enough quickness to play SF at the D1 level.

Derail Green - Slender 6'7" guy from Houston - same HS as Murry. He's something like a 18/8 guy this year. Great 3-point shooter. Projects as a SF. Likely RS prospect to put on some weight.

Deontae Hawkins - Another 6'7" guy that projects as a SF. Potential impact player as a Fr.

Fred Van Vleet - 5'11" PG who has played AAU ball against every top PG in the nation. Scouting services who watched him say he beat them. Since he committed to WSU early, Scout and Rivals did not observe him last summer and left his ranking at what he had after his So season. Consensus top-20 PG nationally. #1 or #2 pick for Mr. Illinois this year.

Coming off a red shirt walk on year:

Ron Baker - 6'3" SG who everybody associated with the program (coaches, insiders, players) say is the best shooter on the squad this year. We've seen his D, footwork, etc. at Shocker Madness and haven't seen quickness, footwork other other issues that might cause concern. Everybody actually thinks he's a better pure shooter than Ragland or Kyles.

Another 5 Sr's class next year. A recruiting class that Marshall really likes. The future looks better than what Marshall has at WSU this year. Probably not next year, but it appears he's got the pieces for a 2-year run at what the Shox have this year.

It's going to be hard for a BCS program to offer Marshall something he can't do at WSU. The big-money programs that could afford $2.5 mill or so don't actually have the possibilities of success that Marshall has at WSU - at least those who are losing their coaches.

Aargh, the only thing a BCS program can offer him is name and status. I am hoping he watched the other Valley coaches who jumped to the BCS and learned that the grass is not greener. I understand a guy making 400K a year taking a BCS jump to 1.3M, etc, etc. But, if the "mid-major" money is comparable, the resources are in line with the big boys and the fans are filling the stadium, why move???????

I am convinced that the Redshirts and Recruits, if properly developed, and with no defections, will allow the Shockers to match up with the better teams and most elite programs. Your advantage will be keeping them for the Jr and Sr year and the team chemistry kicking in: a line up of 3-5 year players playing a team of one and done's will have a fair shot at winning.

A deep run in the NCAAs this year may cause a kid to add WSU to his finals list.

#1 pick for Mr. Basketball in Illinois? I think not. Jabari Parker. A matter of fact, I will go out on a limb and say Van Vleet isn't the highest MVC recruit in the running for Mr. Basketball in Illinois. I predict....North Chicago's Aaron Simpson (signed with Illinois State) will finish higher than Van Vleet in the voting. Regardless, Parker is going to win it.

I partially quoted Aargh to add a little additional info:

Early was a concensus top 3 juco player at the Freshman 100 invitational last summer. He did not block 42 shots in one game...That distinction belongs to 6-7, 240 lb Earl Watson. He is a verbal commit for 2013 and is a freshman at a juco in Florida...Early, averaged 24 and 11 as a freshman last year along with 3 assists and 3 blocks per game. He is right along those lines this year as well.

Green has a pretty stroke!!! He is a 6-7 guard, and how that will translate to the D-I level is uncertain.

Henry U is a complete mystery, but he is 7-0 and athletic.

Hawkins was ranked #135 in the nation prior to signing with the Shockers. The starting 5 at his HS are all D-I committments (including Yates at Creighton) and he leads the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots.

VanVleet is currently ranked 151 by rivals and scouts based purely on stats as no one saw him play. ESPN has him in the top 100. Bill Self put a call in to make sure his committment was firm.

Here's a brief description and a poll for "Mr. Illinois". Interested fans can get an idea about Simpson and VanVleet.
http://hardhoopsnews.com/hhnillinoismrb.html

My bad on the 42 blocks. That is attributed to Earl Watson, a 2013 commit.

We've absolutely failed to mention a walkon who will be a Jr. next year.
Joe Mitchell - 6'1" combo guard JuCo AA. 18.2 points, 5.4 boards, 4.2 assists for a very good Hutchinson JuCo. Mitchell is from Wichita and wanted to be close to home. When WSU was out of scholarships, he said he didn't need one.

Speaking of walkons - here is the list of players who are paying their own way to play for Marshall.

Ron Baker (recruited by Kansas State and Nebraska), Malcolm Armstead (3-year PG at Oregon - holds the Oregon single-season record for steals), Joe Mitchell. The players often give a lot of credit for their on-court success to having "a really good scout team".
