Several witnesses said coaches from both teams exchanged words in the hallway outside the locker rooms after the game, sending security guards scurrying.
WSU coach Gregg Marshall declined to comment on the specifics. He did discuss the matter with Illinois State athletic director Gary Friedman. A security guard followed him and his players while they walked around the arena until they exited.
“I’m not going to talk about that,” Marshall said. “That was crazy. It was uncalled for, I’ll just put it that way.”
The rivalry between the two teams heated up in last season’s Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, when the Redbirds eliminated the Shockers in a physical game. This summer, assistant coach Dana Ford left WSU, after one season as a full-time coach, to join the Illinois State staff, adding another element of tension to the series.
