7 of VCU's fouls came after the last media time-out with 5 of them in the last 1:30 of the game to force UNI to shoot FT's to extend the game. That also makes a huge difference in the FTs attempted for the game. Of UNI's 28 free throws 13 came after the last media time out and 10 during the last 1:30. Meaning that taking out the "extending the game" free throws the FTs were 15-12 UNI.

During that same time UNI was doing everything they could to avoid a foul to not give VCU points with the clock not running...and they didn't have a single foul.

Yep, at the final media time out the fouls were 18-15. I'd say that was pretty evenly called. :Bam:

UNI had more fast break, points in the paint and 2nd chance points than VCU.

The last lead VCU had was 17-15 with 5:4 left in the first half. UNI tied the game at 17 less than a minute later and never looked back. VCU tied the game at 44 with 12:13 left in the game but UNI hit a 3 on their next possession and the game was never closer than that the rest of the game. UNI's average lead in the second half was 5.

Honestly, the game was as close as the score indicated by looking through the stats

Well said! Those stats back up what I saw as well. Who does UNI loose this spring? Mitchell, Buss, and Tuttle are going to be a nice group. A solid supporting cast will be there as well.

The only seniors on the roster are Chip Rank and Matt Morrison

Chip is a solid player. He doesn't do anything better than average (though he is a decent shooter). His contributions to the team are more of a coach on the floor. He is uses solid fundamentals and position but isn't irreplaceable.

Matt Morrison isn't a real contributor. He played in 14 games last season before tearing his ham string, however with Washpun and Morgan on the floor this year he won't see many minutes other than what he saw today.

Mitchell, Buss, and Tuttle are juniors (along with Singleton who needs to get more minutes than he does) and a couple walk ons.

Washpun and Matt Bohannon are sophomores.

The rest of the team is freshman - Morgan and Freidman (who likely won't see many more minutes this year) have both started, and 3 redshirts who could be good for UNI if they put some weight on 2 of them (Koch the younger and another 3/4 player and if Robert Knarr can recover from another ACL tear. He was a 40% 3pt shooter in HS but has issues with ACL)

Tansfer Paul Jespersen will be a Sophomore when he is eligible next season.

Jesperson will be a Junior, and Buss has a shot to get another year, I mean if Gibbs got one with a very similar situation you never know.

As for the game, both teams got away with some contact, and I would say the missed calls really didn't change the outcome of the game. We missed way too many open shots/layups early on in the game. Luckily we got hot in the 2nd half. UNI won't lose many games when we score 50 points in a half, and give up 20 in another.

This team plays to the level of their competition. It was nice to see them keep a 2nd half lead against a good team unlike against Iowa State and Milwaukee.

Nate Buss has to be one of the most improved players in the conference. He is playing at such a high level right now. It is fun to watch him. I think Jeremy Morgan will give whoever is in the running for freshman of the year a very good run for their money. Hopefully the confidence they have earned recently will carry over when they head to a very good Virginia team next weekend!

Agreed.

Milton Doyle, LUC, Season stats: 16.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.5 spg

Jeremy Morgan, UNI, Career bests: 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals

FWIW, I'm a Jeremy Morgan fan and will be surprised if he is not on the All-Freshman team, but for him to give Doyle a run for his money, Morgan needs to turn his career bests into his season averages.

I agree on Morgan. Unless he gets a chance to start and basically takes over our offense during conference play then I don't think he'll be able to post the stats necessary to take that award.
[Insert snappy comeback]
